Troubleshooting Windows Update Error 0x80070002 on Windows 11

Windows Update error 0x80070002 appears when Windows 11 cannot complete an update installation. Microsoft’s support guidance identifies it as an “update failed to install” error and recommends beginning with a restart, the Windows Update troubleshooter, and a check for sufficient disk space.

The code can appear during different updates, so it does not by itself confirm that one particular file, driver, or application caused the failure. Use the steps below in order, and retry Windows Update after each major step.

Before you start

Save your work, connect the computer to power, and make sure the internet connection is stable. Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history and note the KB number of the failed update. Back up important personal files before using the advanced repair options later in this guide.

1. Restart Windows and retry the update

Microsoft’s first recommendation for error 0x80070002 is to restart the PC. This closes applications that may be interfering with the update and completes any pending restart from an earlier installation.

  1. Save open files and close running applications.
  2. Select Start > Power > Restart.
  3. After Windows loads, open Settings > Windows Update.
  4. Select Check for updates and try the installation again.

If the same code returns, continue to the troubleshooter.

2. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter

The built-in troubleshooter runs diagnostics and attempts to correct common Windows Update problems automatically.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
  3. Locate Windows Update and select Run.
  4. Follow the instructions shown on screen.
  5. Restart the PC when the troubleshooter finishes, then check for updates again.

3. Check available storage

Microsoft includes insufficient disk space among the conditions to check when 0x80070002 prevents an update from installing. Open Settings > System > Storage to see how much space is available on the Windows drive.

If storage is low, remove unneeded temporary files or move personal files to another drive. Do not delete folders inside the Windows directory manually. After freeing space, restart the PC and retry the update.

4. Disconnect nonessential external hardware

Microsoft’s broader Windows Update guidance recommends disconnecting hardware that is not required for basic operation. Unplug external storage devices, docks, and other optional USB accessories, while leaving the keyboard and mouse connected. Then run Windows Update again.

This step does not prove that an external device caused error 0x80070002; it simply removes another possible source of interference during installation.

5. Clear the Windows Update cache

If the error persists, rebuild the folder Windows uses to store downloaded update files. Microsoft documents the following procedure:

  1. Press Windows + R, enter services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Find Windows Update, right-click it, and select Stop.
  3. Open C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution in File Explorer.
  4. Delete the files and folders inside SoftwareDistribution, but leave the main folder in place.
  5. Return to Services, right-click Windows Update, and select Start.
  6. Restart the computer and check for updates.

Windows will download the update files again. This process does not remove personal documents or installed applications.

6. Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

When the simpler checks do not work, Microsoft recommends its built-in servicing tools for repairing Windows components and protected system files.

  1. Search for Command Prompt.
  2. Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
  3. Run DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth.
  4. Wait for DISM to complete successfully.
  5. Run sfc /scannow.
  6. Keep Command Prompt open until verification reaches 100 percent.
  7. Restart Windows and try the update again.

DISM repairs the Windows component image used during servicing. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies when possible.

7. Reinstall the current version of Windows

If 0x80070002 continues after the preceding repairs, Windows 11 may offer a recovery option that reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings.

  1. Open Settings > System > Recovery.
  2. Under Fix problems using Windows Update, select Reinstall now.
  3. Keep the device connected to power and the internet.
  4. Restart the PC after the reinstallation completes.

This option may not appear on devices managed by a workplace or school, or on systems controlled by certain update policies. Contact the administrator if the setting is unavailable on a managed PC.

What the error code does not confirm

Error 0x80070002 confirms that the update failed to install, but it does not identify one universal cause on every Windows 11 computer. Avoid assuming that unrelated preview-build fixes, battery bugs, Settings crashes, or DRM playback problems apply to your device unless Microsoft’s documentation names the same update and configuration.

When to contact support

Contact Microsoft Support or your IT administrator if the update still fails after the troubleshooter, storage check, cache rebuild, DISM/SFC repair, and Windows repair reinstall. Include the failed KB number, Windows version, error code, and the final messages produced by DISM and SFC.
