Windows 11 Wi-Fi Keeps Disconnecting? Try These Proven Fixes

A Windows 11 computer that repeatedly drops its Wi-Fi connection can interrupt video calls, downloads, gaming sessions, and everyday browsing. The problem does not always come from the internet provider. It can also be caused by a saved network configuration, the wireless adapter, its driver, or the router itself.

The safest approach is to start with simple checks and move gradually toward the fixes that make broader changes to Windows.

1. Check whether the problem affects other devices

Before changing Windows settings, connect another phone, tablet, or computer to the same Wi-Fi network.

  • If every device disconnects, restart the modem and router.
  • If only the Windows 11 computer disconnects, continue with the steps below.
  • If the problem happens only in one room, weak signal strength or interference may be involved.

Restarting the router can clear temporary connection errors. Disconnect its power, wait about 30 seconds, reconnect it, and allow it to finish starting before testing the computer again.

2. Turn Wi-Fi off and back on

Open the Quick Settings panel by selecting the network, sound, or battery area on the taskbar. Turn Wi-Fi off, wait several seconds, and turn it back on.

Also confirm that Airplane mode is disabled:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Network & internet.
  3. Select Airplane mode.
  4. Make sure Airplane mode is off.

3. Forget the network and reconnect

A damaged or outdated saved Wi-Fi profile can cause repeated connection failures. Removing the profile forces Windows to create a fresh one.

  1. Open Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi.
  2. Select Manage known networks.
  3. Select the affected network.
  4. Choose Forget.
  5. Reconnect from the Wi-Fi list and enter the password again.

This will remove the stored password for that network, so make sure you know it before proceeding.

4. Run the Windows network troubleshooter

Windows includes automated diagnostics that can check common configuration and adapter problems.

  1. Open the Get Help app.
  2. Search for network troubleshooter.
  3. Follow the recommended diagnostic steps.

The troubleshooter may restart an adapter, correct a setting, or identify a driver problem.

5. Restart the Wi-Fi adapter

  1. Right-click the Start button and open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Network adapters.
  3. Right-click the wireless adapter.
  4. Select Disable device.
  5. Wait several seconds, right-click it again, and select Enable device.

This restarts the adapter without restarting the entire computer.

6. Update the wireless driver

An outdated or incompatible Wi-Fi driver can cause instability, particularly after a Windows update.

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Network adapters.
  3. Right-click the Wi-Fi adapter.
  4. Select Update driver.
  5. Select Search automatically for drivers.

You should also check the support website of the computer manufacturer. Laptop manufacturers sometimes provide a newer or model-specific wireless driver that is not yet available through Windows Update.

7. Reinstall the Wi-Fi adapter

If updating the driver does not work, reinstalling the adapter may repair a corrupted driver installation.

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Network adapters.
  3. Right-click the wireless adapter.
  4. Select Uninstall device.
  5. Restart the computer.

Windows should detect the adapter and reinstall its driver during startup.

8. Use Network Reset as a final step

Network Reset removes and reinstalls network adapters and restores related settings to their defaults. Because it may remove VPN or virtual network configurations, it should be used after the less disruptive fixes.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Network & internet.
  3. Select Advanced network settings.
  4. Select Network reset.
  5. Choose Reset now.

The computer will need to restart. You may also need to reconnect to saved Wi-Fi networks and reconfigure VPN software.

When the router may be responsible

Investigate the router rather than Windows when several devices disconnect together, the network disappears completely, or the problem happens at the same time every day. Check for router firmware updates and contact the internet provider when the connection itself repeatedly goes offline.
