Microsoft released Windows 11 update KB5121003 on August 11, 2026, for versions 24H2 and 25H2. It installs OS Builds 26100.9168 and 26200.9168. Some users report that the download or installation appears stuck at 0%, but Microsoft does not currently list a general 0% installation failure as a confirmed known issue for this update.
Microsoft has separately acknowledged reports of certain games becoming unresponsive after KB5121003. Treat other symptoms as user reports unless Microsoft adds them to the official release-health documentation.
1. Wait and Check Activity
The progress indicator can remain unchanged while Windows prepares files in the background. Keep the computer connected to power and a stable network. Avoid interrupting it immediately, especially if the device still shows disk, CPU, or network activity.
2. Restart Normally
If Windows remains responsive, use Start > Power > Restart. After restarting, return to Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. A normal restart is safer than holding the power button while an update is actively installing.
3. Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter
- Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Run the Windows Update troubleshooter.
- Apply the recommended changes and restart the computer.
4. Use the Get Help App
Open Microsoft’s Get Help app and search for “Windows Update problem.” Follow the automated checks. This is preferable to manually deleting update files when the cause is unknown.
5. Install From Microsoft Update Catalog
If Windows Update repeatedly fails but Windows remains usable, search the Microsoft Update Catalog for KB5121003. Download only the package matching the device architecture and Windows version. Create a backup before a manual installation.
6. Use Windows Recovery Environment Only When Necessary
If Windows cannot start, it may enter Windows Recovery Environment automatically. Microsoft also documents interrupting the normal boot process two times so that Windows opens Automatic Repair on the third start. This method should be reserved for a computer that cannot boot normally—not a responsive Windows Update screen.
From Windows RE, try Startup Repair. If the problem started only after KB5121003 installed successfully, Uninstall Updates > Uninstall latest quality update may return the system to its previous state.
7. Protect Your Files
Back up important data before manual installation, recovery, or update removal. Do not download Windows update packages from unofficial websites, and do not repeatedly force the computer off during an active update.
