Some Samsung Galaxy owners have reported a “Camera failed” message, an app that will not open, focusing problems, or reduced image quality after updating to One UI 8.5. Reports currently involve different Galaxy models, so the available evidence does not establish one confirmed cause or prove that every A-series device is affected.
Start with Samsung’s official camera troubleshooting steps. Avoid assuming that the update permanently damaged the camera hardware.
1. Restart the Galaxy Device
Open the Power menu and select Restart. A restart can clear a temporary camera process or driver failure that appeared during or after an update.
2. Reset the Camera Settings
- Open the Camera app.
- Open Camera settings. On newer One UI versions, you may need to tap the four-dot Quick settings icon first.
- Select Reset settings and confirm.
This resets camera preferences but does not delete photos or videos.
3. Clear the Camera Cache and Data
- Open Settings > Apps > Camera.
- Select Storage.
- Tap Clear cache.
- If the problem continues, tap Clear data and confirm.
Clearing Camera data resets the app’s settings. It does not normally delete images stored in Gallery, but important files should always be backed up before advanced troubleshooting.
4. Check for Camera and System Updates
In the Camera app, open Settings > About Camera and install any available Camera update. Then go to Settings > Software update > Download and install to check for a maintenance patch.
Samsung also recommends checking for a Google Play system update when troubleshooting some “Camera failed” errors.
5. Run Samsung Members Diagnostics
Open the Samsung Members app, go to Support, and run the Camera diagnostic. If the issue can be reproduced, submit an Error report soon afterward so that the report can include relevant system logs.
6. Test the Camera in Safe Mode
Safe Mode temporarily disables downloaded apps:
- Open the Power menu.
- Touch and hold Power off.
- Select Safe mode.
- Test the Camera app.
If the camera works in Safe Mode, a recently installed or updated app may be interfering with it. Remove recently added apps one at a time and test after each change. If the error remains in Safe Mode, a third-party app is less likely to be the cause.
7. Use a Factory Reset Only as a Last Step
A factory data reset erases personal data and should not be an early fix. Back up the phone first with Samsung Smart Switch or a supported cloud service. After the reset, test the camera before restoring apps and settings.
When to Contact Samsung
Contact Samsung Support if the camera continues to fail after official diagnostics, updates, Safe Mode, and—if appropriate—a properly backed-up factory reset. Hardware service may be necessary when diagnostics detect a component problem or the failure continues on a clean device.
