How to Fix Android Auto Black Screen After an Update

An Android Auto black screen can appear after a phone update, an Android Auto update, or a change to the vehicle’s infotainment software. The car display may remain blank even though the phone appears connected, or Android Auto may start and then freeze. Because several different connection failures can produce the same symptom, the safest approach is to test one part of the connection at a time.

Before You Start

Park the vehicle in a safe location before changing settings, reconnecting the phone, or restarting the infotainment system. Do not troubleshoot the display while driving.

Start by confirming that Android Auto previously worked with the same phone and vehicle. If this is a first-time setup, check that the vehicle or aftermarket receiver officially supports Android Auto. A USB port alone does not guarantee compatibility.

1. Restart the Phone and Infotainment System

Disconnect the phone, restart it, and then restart the vehicle’s infotainment system using the method described in the vehicle manual. After both devices finish restarting, reconnect the phone and wait for Android Auto to load.

This step clears temporary processes left behind by an operating-system or application update without deleting saved vehicles or other connection data.

2. Test a Different USB Cable and Port

For wired Android Auto, a cable can continue charging the phone even when its data connection is unreliable. Google recommends using a high-quality cable shorter than three feet, or approximately one metre, without a USB hub or extension.

Try the cable supplied with the phone or another certified data cable. If the vehicle has multiple USB ports, use the port specifically marked for phone projection or Android Auto. Some vehicle ports provide power but do not support data.

3. Confirm That Android Auto Is Enabled

Open the infotainment settings and confirm that Android Auto or smartphone projection is enabled. Some vehicles allow the feature to be disabled for a specific phone after a connection error.

On the phone, open:

Settings → Connected devices → Connection preferences → Android Auto

The exact menu names can differ between phone manufacturers. Check whether the vehicle appears under previously connected cars and whether the phone has permission to connect.

4. Forget the Vehicle and Pair It Again

If the black screen continues, remove the existing pairing and create a fresh connection. In Android Auto settings, open Previously connected cars and select Forget all cars. Remove the phone from the vehicle’s Bluetooth device list as well.

Restart both systems, pair the phone again, and follow the setup prompts while the vehicle is parked. For wireless Android Auto, keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services enabled during setup.

5. Check for Phone and Vehicle Updates

Install available Android system updates, Google Play system updates, and Android Auto updates. Also check the vehicle or aftermarket receiver manufacturer’s official support page for infotainment firmware updates.

Use only firmware published for the exact receiver or vehicle model. Installing firmware intended for a different model can create additional compatibility problems. If the setup includes a wireless adapter or AI box, temporarily remove it and connect the phone directly. This helps determine whether the black screen comes from Android Auto, the car display, or the third-party adapter.

6. Test Another Phone

Connect another compatible Android phone to the same vehicle. If the second phone works, the problem is more likely connected to the first phone’s software, permissions, cable, or saved pairing. If both phones show a black screen, the vehicle display, receiver firmware, or USB port becomes the more likely cause.

When to Contact Support

Contact the vehicle or receiver manufacturer if the display remains black with multiple phones and cables. Report the phone model, Android version, vehicle model, infotainment version, connection type, and the update installed immediately before the problem started.

Avoid downloading unverified firmware files or using reset procedures intended for a different receiver. Manufacturer-specific instructions are safer than community fixes when the issue involves vehicle firmware.
