Google Chrome may appear several times in Windows Task Manager or macOS Activity Monitor even when only one browser window is open. Chrome separates tabs, extensions, graphics tasks, and other browser components into different processes. This can improve stability, but a busy tab or extension can still consume enough memory to slow down the computer.
Instead of closing the entire browser, use Chrome’s built-in performance tools to identify the cause.
1. Turn on Memory Saver
Chrome’s Memory Saver feature frees memory from inactive tabs. The tabs remain visible and reload when you return to them.
- Open Chrome.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Open Settings.
- Select Performance.
- Turn on Memory Saver.
Depending on the Chrome version, additional settings may allow you to choose how aggressively inactive tabs are managed.
2. Keep important websites active
Some websites need to continue running in the background, including messaging tools, dashboards, music services, or pages that perform active work.
Inside Settings > Performance, add essential websites to the list of sites that should always remain active. Avoid adding every website, because that reduces the benefit of Memory Saver.
3. Use Chrome Task Manager
Chrome includes its own Task Manager, which can show how much memory individual tabs, extensions, and browser processes are using.
On Windows, open it with:
Shift + Esc
You can also open it from Chrome’s menu under More tools > Task Manager, depending on the version.
Look for a tab or extension with unusually high memory use. Select it and choose End process only when you are prepared for that tab or extension to stop.
4. Close pages that run continuously
Some websites use more memory because they constantly update content or run complex scripts. Common examples include:
- Video streaming pages
- Browser-based games
- Large web applications
- Live dashboards
- Pages with many advertisements or embedded videos
- Sites left open for several days
Reloading the page can clear a temporary memory increase. Closing it completely is more effective when it is no longer needed.
5. Disable unnecessary extensions
Extensions can run on multiple pages and continue working in the background.
- Enter chrome://extensions in the address bar.
- Review every installed extension.
- Disable extensions you do not actively use.
- Remove extensions you do not recognize or no longer trust.
- Restart Chrome and compare memory usage.
If the problem improves, enable the extensions one at a time to identify the one responsible.
6. Update Chrome
- Open the three-dot menu.
- Select Help.
- Select About Google Chrome.
- Allow Chrome to check for updates.
- Relaunch the browser when requested.
An update may include stability, security, and performance fixes.
7. Restart Chrome completely
Closing the visible window may not stop every background process when Chrome is allowed to continue running background applications.
Close Chrome, wait several seconds, and verify that its processes disappear from the operating system’s task manager. Then reopen the browser.
You can review background behavior under Chrome’s system settings where available.
8. Test with a fresh Chrome profile
A damaged profile, extension configuration, or synchronized setting may contribute to repeated memory problems.
Create a temporary Chrome profile and test the same websites without installing extensions. If memory use is noticeably lower, the original profile or one of its extensions is likely involved.
9. Check whether the computer is running out of memory overall
Chrome may not be the only program using large amounts of RAM. Open Windows Task Manager or macOS Activity Monitor and examine total memory use.
Video editors, games, virtual machines, development tools, and communication applications can compete for memory at the same time.
Why Chrome shows multiple processes
Multiple Chrome entries do not automatically mean that something is wrong. Chrome isolates different tasks so that one failing tab or extension is less likely to crash the entire browser. The important question is whether a specific process is using excessive resources or the computer is becoming unresponsive.
When resetting Chrome may help
Consider resetting Chrome settings only after testing extensions, updating the browser, and checking the profile. A reset can change the startup page, search engine, pinned tabs, and extension state, so review Google’s reset instructions before proceeding.
